Coppelia Ballet promo

Artistic Director, Stephen Sanford, presents the WMYB spring performance of “Coppélia” March 27th
(7 pm) and 28th (1pm and 4:30 pm) at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center! Sanford retired as principle
dancer with the Grand Rapids Ballet in 2015 to assume the Artistic Director position for the West
Michigan Youth Ballet. “Coppélia is very well known in the ballet world”, stated Sanford, “and we are
excited to bring it to life here in Grand Rapids.” This ballet is perfect for all ages and a great
introduction to ballet for young children.
“Coppélia” is often referred to as the “great comedy” ballet set to the musical score of Delibes to be
enjoyed by families everywhere. The story revolves around an eccentric toy maker, Dr. Coppelius,
whose life like doll, Coppélia, captures the attention of a young village couple, Swanhilda and Franz.
Franz quickly develops a crush on Coppélia not knowing she is only a doll. Swanhilda becomes
jealous and upset with Franz, because they are supposed to be engaged to be married. Act II takes
place in Dr. Coppelius’ mysterious toy shop. Swanhilda and her friends sneak into the shop to find
Coppélia and realize that she is only a doll. They find other life size dolls and begin to play and set
them into motion. Franz climbs through a window in the toy shop to find Coppélia, but finds Dr.
Coppelius instead. The scene continues when Swanhilda pretends to be Coppélia and has fun
getting back at her beloved Franz. As the second Act concludes, Franz and Swanhilda make up and
know that theirs is true love. Act III is a day of jubilee and the wedding of Swanhilda and Franz.
Included in Act III are the classical dances of Waltz of the Hours, Prayer, Dawn and Folly concluding
with the Wedding Pas de Deux.
“Coppélia” has been restaged through the direction of Stephen Sanford, with additional original
choreography by Mr. Sanford, Miss Laura Berman and Miss Margie Vizurraga. The ballet will feature
50 youth dancers, ages 8 – 18 years old, representing more than eight dance studios throughout west
Michigan. The 122 costumes including 52 newly created reflect the brilliant colors of the region and
the story set depicts the charming village where the story unfolds.
